What Eric experienced when he took a bite of pasta sauce was a blast of added sugarâit was the number two ingredient in his supposedly healthy pasta, more common even than tomatoes. The sauce hadnât gone bad at all; it was just so sweet to his adjusted taste buds that it seemed to be off.
Sugar is added to everything.
This week you may find yourself disappointed. You may read the label on a food you like to eat and notice that it has added sugar. Disappointment seems like a natural responseâbut donât give into it.
Instead of feeling disappointed, feel angry.
Disappointment will lead you to eat that food. The Food Devil will use disappointment to pry open the door and convince you that eating the food will make you feel better, the way eating used to make you feel better. âLook,â the Food Devil will tell you, âitâs not that much. Sugar is in everything anyway. You may as well eat it; you canât fight it. Anyway, who wants the hassle of eating something else?â
The sugar is there to get you to buy and eat more food than you need. The sugar is there to boost profitability for companies that donât care about your health. The sugar in that food is one of the reasons you are in the condition that has you reading this book right now.
Instead of feeling disappointed by the realization that your favorite foods contain unnecessary added sugar, feel angry. Very angry. The sugar is there to hook you and boost their profits at the cost of your health and quality of life.
Feel angry enough to smash that food on the floor. Okay, you probably shouldnât actually smash itâbut do put it back on the shelf. Donât buy it. Go find the store manager and say, âWhy is there added sugar in every single tomato sauce you sell?â If enough of us do this over time, you will not only have a massive impact on your own health but also on food manufacturing around the world.
Celebration: Each time you resist sugar, celebrate. Every time you discover sugar somewhere that surprises you, celebrate. This is an important week; for many it will be the beginning of freedom from sugar.
Note from the Doctor: Wow, removing processed sugar will have a major effect on your blood glucose levels! Processed dietary sugars enter your blood system at lightning speed and cause massive glucose spikes and insulin responses. Sugars from fruit and vegetables have far less sugar in comparison and take much more time to digest. Far less insulin is needed, and there is markedly less glucose in the bloodstream.
Be extra careful now, especially if youâre taking medications that stay in your system a long time. Sulfonylureas (for example, glipizide or glyburide) and meglitinides (for example, repaglinide) should be stopped. These medications stay in your body a long time and can cause hypoglycemia or low blood glucose for days. Get your medical provider on board. Find out if youâre on one of these types of medications.
